MARKET RELEVANT CODES AND COMMUNICATION LEADERSHIP PROJECT* UPDATE
Codes of Practice
Chickens, Turkeys and Breeders - An updated Code of Practice for the care and handling of hatching eggs, breeders, chickens and turkeys will be released June 15, 2016. Watch NFACC’s website for this new Code, which was updated in accordance with NFACC’s Code development process. A news release will be issued just as the Code goes “live”.
This has been one of the most complex Code development processes completed to date given the number of sectors involved. Revisions to the “poultry (meat)” Code started in 2011. The public comment period, which ended in December 2015, garnered over 900 submissions.
Many thanks to the Code development committee for their commitment and hard work, which made the development of this Code possible.
Poultry (layers) – Get ready for the public comment period! The Code Development Committee is meeting in early May with the aim of releasing the draft layer Code for broader input through the public comment period as soon as possible. Clarifications on the Code development process and the status of the layer Code were made available at www.nfacc.ca/news?articleid=263 for those wishing to better understand the process for Code Development Committee deliberations.
Rabbits – the Code Development Committee had its most recent meeting in March 2016. A summary of this meeting is available at www.nfacc.ca/progress-report-rabbit. The next meeting is scheduled for July.
Veal Cattle – the Code Development Committee met in March 2016. A summary of the meeting is available at www.nfacc.ca/progress-report-veal-cattle. The next meeting is scheduled for June.
Bison – the Code Development Committee met in February 2016. A summary of that meeting is available at www.nfacc.ca/progress-report-bison. The next meeting is scheduled for June 2016.
PROJECT ACHIEVEMENTS REPORT (2015-2016) RELEASED
NFACC is championing progress on farm animal care through the Market Relevant Codes and Communication Leadership Project. A compilation of accomplishments for Year Two (April 2015-March 2016) of the project is now available from NFACC’s website at www.nfacc.ca/pdfs/NFACC_AR_2016_EN.pdf. Two whiteboard videos have been released to explain the Code development process in an engaging way that breaks down the complexities of the process.
