The Recommended code of practice for the care and handling of farm animals: Transportation was released in 2001. It was developed through the Canadian Agri-Food Research Council (CARC), which disbanded in 2006. While this Code is considered out-of-date, some of the information contained in the Code is still considered useful guidance (e.g., density charts). Hence NFACC continues to host this Code on its website. However, the Recommended code of practice for the care and handling of farm animals: Transportation was not developed through NFACC’s rigorous Code process and should not be referred to as an “NFACC Code”.
This Code was developed many years prior to the 2019 amendments to Part XII (Transport of Animals) of the Health of Animals Regulations (HAR). Hence, the transportation Code references regulations that are out-of-date.
For current rules and guidance on humane transport, please refer to the HAR that are posted by the Government of Canada (www.laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/regulations/C.R.C.,_c._296/page-10.html#h-548075), along with the Interpretive Guidance, (https://inspection.canada.ca/animal-health/terrestrial-animals/humane-transport/health-of-animals-regulations-part-xii/eng/1582126008181/1582126616914), which is updated as necessary by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA).
- There are various ways to view the Code: the full HTML version, the PDF version (1.3 MB).

NFACC does not have any hard copies of this Code.
