MARKET RELEVANT CODES AND COMMUNICATION LEADERSHIP PROJECT* UPDATE
Codes of Practice
Chickens, Turkeys and Breeders – the draft Code of Practice for the Care and Handling of Hatching Eggs, Breeders, Chickens and Turkeys is available for public comment until December 4th. The Chicken Farmers of Canada, Canadian Poultry and Egg Processors Council, Turkey Farmers of Canada, Canadian Hatching Egg producers and the National Farm Animal Care Council (NFACC) announced the launch of the public comment period on October 5th.
The draft Code can be viewed and submissions made through NFACC’s website at www.nfacc.ca/codes-of-practice/chickens-turkeys-and-breeders. All comments must be submitted through the online system, for which easy to follow instructions are provided.
Poultry (layers) – the Code Development Committee will meet in December. This is expected to be the last meeting before the public comment period, which is tentatively planned for early spring 2016. A summary from the September meeting is available at www.nfacc.ca/progress-report-layers.
Rabbits – the Code Development Committee’s next meeting is in January 2016. A summary of the September meeting is available at www.nfacc.ca/progress-report-rabbit.
Veal Calves – the Code Development Committee met in October. A summary of the meeting is available at www.nfacc.ca/progress-report-veal-calves. The next meeting is scheduled for March.
Bison – the Code Development Committee met in November. A summary of the meeting will soon be available at www.nfacc.ca/progress-report-bison. The next meeting is scheduled for February.

WEBINAR FEATURING DR. DAVID FRASER NOW AVAILABLE
There were over 250 participants for NFACC’s November 9th webinar featuring Dr. David Fraser. Dr. Fraser presented on the theme “A Professional Model for animal agriculture to secure animal welfare and build public trust”. Farm Management Canada (FMC) facilitated the webinar through Agriwebinar.

“PROVIDING MARKET ASSURANCE THROUGH A NATIONAL ASSURANCE SYSTEM MODEL" PROJECT PARTIALLY APPROVED*
NFACC’s project proposal, submitted through the Canadian Animal Health Coalition, was approved for a reduced contribution of up to $314,280. The project will develop two respective Animal Care Assessment Programs for the mink and fox sectors in cooperation with the Canada Mink Breeders Association and the Canada Fox Breeders Association. Both programs will be developed utilizing NFACC’s Animal Care Assessment Framework, providing a mechanism to verify adherence to each species Code of Practice.
INTRODUCING A NEW NFACC TEAM MEMBER
Welcome to Ina Eriksson as NFACC’s new Communications and Technical Administrative Assistant. Ina has worked in the livestock industry for over 17 years,with an emphasis on marketing and communications. She is originally from Sweden, but has made Canada (specifically Bowden, Alberta) her home. Ina will transition into the position previously held by Mikki Shatosky.
